Last Week, Stars Went for Individualism and Outré Embellishment

Milan fashion week brought out some strong competition for bold looks from the world’s most stylish. The best choices are only one part catwalk and every other part a reflection of the personality of the wearer. At Prada’s outing for spring/summer 2020, artist Juman Malouf showed how it’s done in a floor-length brocade gown that spoke to her eclectic, historicist style. At Etro, Hikari Mori did the same, embracing Veronica Etro’s bohemian velvet and lace while keeping things sexy with a flash of bare leg.

On the party circuit in Milan, individualism and flash was everything. From Kendall Jenner’s sleek Versace jumpsuit to Anok Yai’s slinky leopard spots, animalia ruled. And at amFar’s annual gala, Rita Ora serenaded the crowed in a frilly Prada dress embroidered with crystals: it was Rita and Miuccia all in one frock!

Elsewhere the vibe after dark was equally eclectic, personal, and a touch wild. At the opening ceremony gala for the Opera Garnier, Alma Jodorowsky rang in dance season in a sculpted Chanel gown that fit like armor. Rihanna packed plenty of stylish looks for her trip to Seoul, but none captured her current status as provocateur/mogul better than Jacquemus’ oversized white suit. In Los Angeles, meanwhile, Ruth Negga capped off her press tour for Ad Astra by skipping futuristic fashion in favor of a palm print Gucci evening dress with vintage flair. Back in Milan, the runways were all about jungle prints; Negga, always, one step ahead.
